 Anytime Fitness now open in Weirton

WEIRTON – Area residents looking for a workout any time of day can do just that at the new Anytime Fitness, which opened in Weirton Thursday.

The new Anytime , located at 218 Park Drive, near the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Weirton, offers a variety of fitness equipment manufactured by Life Fitness, as well as tanning and other features. It is all available 24 hours a day.

It joins located in the Hollywood City Center in Steubenville.

“Now there are two clubs in the area for one membership fee,” owner Arieh Ordronneau said.

As the latest of approximately 1,700 locations in the country, if someone joins the Weirton club, their membership is good at any other location.

Thursday was filled with new members coming in to pick up their keys and other information, with some new members signing up and even a few people getting some use of the fitness equipment.

“The first day is just a wild flurry of activity,” Ordronneau said.

According to Ordronneau, the Weirton community has embraced Anytime Fitness, and he sees the club having a good base of members before the weather begins warming up.

“Our presales were double what Steubenville was,” he said, adding memberships also were triple what the company normally expects from a franchise opening. “It’s been very well received.”

Ordronneau said many of the members are area residents who commute to Pittsburgh for work, noting the Weirton club is convenient for their morning or evening drives.

“They can hop off and get to the club in a couple of minutes,” he said.

The Weirton location of Anytime Fitness is approximately 5,200 square feet, with near the front, strength training items in the center and weights and other items near the back. A tanning facility also is located in the building.

One of the features most notable with Anytime Fitness is the inclusion of Fitness on Request, which allows members of take a variety of fitness classes made available through a touch-screen computer system.

‘I haven’t got quite the same appetite that I once had,’ said Sir Stirling Moss

I go up them two at a time. My house in Mayfair has six levels and of course I do have a lift, but I haven’t used it since a bad fall in the spring of 2010. The door opened at the wrong time and I fell three floors, breaking both ankles. I had to use a wheelchair to get about for three months. It was very tough, especially as I couldn’t travel — and Susie and I travel a lot.

Chocolate. I probably should cut down, but then I enjoy life! One has to have fun. The same goes for sex — that is still extremely important to me. I haven’t got quite the same appetite that I once had. But it is part of the joy of living.

I have never done any formal in my life. When I was racing I was very, very fit and weighed about 11?st (I’m 5ft 7in). In those days, races were three hours long and I was doing 52 races a year, so I burned off all the calories. Now I weigh about 12st 8lb — a bit overweight, but if you’re reasonably fit I don’t think a few extra pounds make that much difference.

I love and unlike most people I love sprouts. We have a varied diet, but eat more meat than fish. It might be good for the brain but at my age, the door is closed already on that. I haven’t got a good memory any more. It’s very annoying.

‘My face was never damaged that much from car crashes, although my eye fell out when I had the terrible crash that left me in a coma for a month,’ said Stirling (above in 1950)

Iwas teetotal until I was 32. Then I married my second wife (Susie is number three) and she’d say: ‘Come and relax and have a drink.’ I thought: ‘This isn’t bad!’ Now I drink about half a bottle of Chardonnaya day.

I take something for my joints called Osteo Bi-Flex and Aprovel tablets to keep my down. I’m on eye drops just now because I have just had laser eye surgery to improve my vision and it’s fantastic. Jackie Stewart told me about it.

Scarlet fever when I was ten. It was pretty bad, and then when I was 11 I got a chill on my kidneys which turned into nephritis — a very serious kidney infection. I had to stay home and lost a year’s schooling. It’s my excuse for being a bit stupid.

After dinner, my wine and a sleeping pill, I go out with a bang, but I am wide awake at 3.30am and I just lie there and hope I’ll go off again.

If I could have Susie with me — yes.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin on Friday applauded the board of the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) after it approved funds for a at the state Capitol. Board members approved a $38,500 proposal submitted by Fallin, which includes a $20,000 contribution from the Oklahoma Hospital Association. The funds will largely be used for exercise equipment.  

Fallin proposed creating a Capitol Fitness Center in her annual State of the State address earlier this month. 

“Obesity is one of the major drags on the state's health indicators, and we're trying to lead by example at the Capitol by working out and improving our ,” Fallin said. “My thanks go out to the board members of TSET as well as the Oklahoma Hospital Association for their support of this effort.”

In her State of the State address, Fallin addressed Oklahoma's poor health indicators, saying that “ is important, not just because we want Oklahomans to live full and happy lives, but because the effects of unhealthy life choices hurt our economy, drain taxpayer dollars and drive up the cost of for everyone.” 

According to a July 2011 report released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Trust for America's Health, Oklahoma's obesity rate has increased more than any other state since 1995.  

The report also said Oklahoma has the third-highest level of inactivity and for the past three years, is one of five states to have an increase in obesity.

CONNEAUT —  Several weeks’ worth of exercise has earned sixth-grade students at Conneaut state-wide recognition and plenty of equipment. Late last month, the school received more than $500 worth of balls, bean bags, hoops, jump ropes and other gear as a reward for its finish in the “Get Fit School Challenge,” sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and hosted by Radio Disney. Between Oct. 3 and Nov. 26, the school’s sixth-graders were asked to devote a day to some type of physical activity in at least 40 of those 55 days. Charts and stickers provided by teachers helped the students track their time. When the charts were examined and the output tallied, CMS students had logged one of the higher percentages of performance and participation, putting the school among the top in Ohio, said Darcy Quinlan, physical education teacher. Quinlan provided prizes to the students who participated every day of the program. “As a physical education teacher, I try to emphasize free play and activity,” she said in a statement. “This was a great way for the students to find their own ways of exercising outside of the gymnasium. Most of the students realized being active doesn’t necessarily mean doing push-ups and sit-ups. They can rake leaves or shovel snow and still get a good workout. “I hope the sixth-graders winning this prize will continue to motivate not only the students but the staff and community to get active and lead a healthy lifestyle,” Quinlan said in the statement.

Then onto my abs; balancing on a large inflatable ball while doing sit-ups is not my idea of fun at 6.20am on a frosty Tuesday morning, but somehow, I found myself pushing harder than I could have imagined a week ago. I have taken to listening to copious amounts of electronic music, such as Faithless, in a bid to stay pumped while completing this difficult 20-minute cardio routine. Bless Ross – he has to stand next to me in silence throughout the duration of this part of our daily session – just to make sure I don’t give up and slide off, legs akimbo.

Food-wise I am being relatively good, substituting potato for couscous, for fish, and wine for vodka, Apart from the occasional slice of birthday cake this week, my diet is really quite boring – but somehow I have become rather resolute about finally changing my lifestyle.

As I gratefully collapse into weekend – foolishly I think ‘bring on week three’. These daring thoughts are in spite of Ross’s warnings that it’s going to consist of the same exercises, but much harder. I am dreading the shrill cry of the alarm clock already…
